RODENT-BORN DISEASES

Throughout history rodents have been known for causing death, disease, damage and destruction to humans. At the West Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District we are concerned with the potential transmission of diseases such as plague, murine typhus, hantavirus, arenavirus, Lyme disease, and ehrlichiosis by rodents.

Routine surveillance is necessary to monitor rodent population trends and disease potentials. Increases in human-rodent interactions caused by drought, unsanitary conditions, and urban sprawl into foothill habitats triggers a heightened concern for increased risk of exposure of residents to disease transmission.

As part of our rodent surveillance efforts, rodents are routinely trapped and tested for the presence of disease.
